This is the story, in his own words, of one of those determined and resourceful people. Born in 1867 in Illinois, brought up in a sod hut in Iowa, and making his own way to Washington State before it became a state, Frederick Harrison McKay scraped muskrat hides, tilled fields, collected milk, taught school, brokered wheat, and eventually became a bank officer in Spokane, Washington. Stories of the Wild West are filled with colorful characters: Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickcok, Annie Oakley.... But in fact the West was won by the diligence and dogged hard work of thousands of people who piled all their belongings into a wagon and plodded out toward the setting sun. Full of personal anecdotes, this is history in the making.
