This is the last story in the Monkey Series of thirty-four picture books, adapted from the ancient Chinese fantasy novel Journey to the West. In the previous book, Monkey Revives the Dead, Squire Kou received the Tang Priest and his disciples with a great display of wealth. Later, local bandits stole his gold and silver and killed him. The Tang Priest and the other three pilgrims were falsely accused of the theft and put in jail. Monkey found out that Squire Kou's wife had made the false charge, so he had Squire Kou brought back to life and the whole treachery was revealed. Bringing Back the Scriptures, with seventy-eight colour illustrations, tells how the Tang Priest, Xuanzang, and his disciples, after many hardships, finally bring the scriptures from India to China. After fourteen years, crossing nine kingdoms and three prefectures and covering a distance of thirty-six thousand miles, they arrive at Thunder Monastery, where Sakyamuni Buddha gives them 5,048 volumes of the true...
