This is the twelfth in a series of thirty-four books telling the story of Monkey, adapted from the ancient Chinese fantasy novel Journey to the West. In the previous volume the Tang Priest was tricked by a demon who disguised himself as a boy. Monkey battled the demon but could not defeat him, so Monkey sent Pig to fetch the Bodhisattva Guanyin. With her help Monkey finally conquered the demon and rescued his master. Monkey Gets Rid of Three Demons, with seventy illustrations in colour, tells how the Tang Priest and his disciples arrive in the Kingdom of Tarry cart, where they find that Buddhist monks do all the hard labour while Taoist priests enjoy an easy life, because three evil priests have been honoured by the king as the Teachers of the Nation. Monkey competes with the three demons in magic arts and defeats them. The king realizes his error and orders both Buddhism and Taoism to be honoured.
