Shaffir was a member of the small group of organizers and unofficial leaders of the 2011 Israeli social justice protests, and would eventually rise to become spokesperson of the movement. Presenting her candidacy for the Labor Party, she eventually was elected 8th in the party's internal vote toward the January 2013 general legislative elections – and is foreseen to be one of the youngest elected members ever in the Israeli parliament. She was originally placed 9th, but the 3rd on the list (Amir Peretz) left the party. The 9th spot is reserved for a woman; had it not, she would have been about 20 spots lower.
