This short, nonfiction semi-biographical story from WWII tells of an Army Officer and five enlisted men racing the Russians to capture a Japanese experimental laser cannon. The weapon is located on a cliff overlooking the Sea of Japan. The race starts at Manila Nichols Airfield in the Philippine Islands and ends in Nikaho, Japan. The American soldiers journey began with a C-46 air flight to Johnson Air Field in Tokyo, Japan. From there, they traveled by Jeep to a rail line near Fuijaya Air Field. This is where they ran out of official transportation and the Officer got creative. He and his men stole a Japanese train to take them the rest of the way to Nikaho. The officers brilliant transportation idea hit a bit of a snag though the liberated train was carrying three hundred Japanese passengers. More creative thinking was needed to make this plan work. Meanwhile, the Russian Navys submarine was on its way to the same destination carrying six marines who intended to reach the weapon...
