Lincoln in 1860. I T was the unexpected that happened in Chicago on that fateful 18th of l1ay, 1860, when Abraham Lincoln was nominated for President of the United States. It was who11y nnexpected by the friends of Seward; it was hoped for, but not confidently expected, by the friends of Lincoln. The convention was the ablest asscmbly of the kind ever called together in this country. It was the first national deliberative body of the Republican party that "vas to attaiu such illustrious achievements ill the history of free governmellt. The first llational cOllvention of that party, held in Philadelphia in 1856, was composed of a loose aggregation of political free-thinkers, embracing mally 11s11ally denominated as cranks." The party was without organization or cohesion; its delegates were self-appointed and responsible to no regular constituency. It was the sudden eruption of the intense resentment of the people of the North against the encroachments of Slav.
