PRE FA CE. A portion of the following pages originally appeared in the columns of the American Chemist, under the title: "Schemes of Analyses executed in the School of Mines, Columbia College." Numerous applications for copies in book form have induced the author to publish the Schemes under a more general title. Since writing the articles the author has been called to another sphere of labor, and the circumstances which led to their compilation are explained in the following paragraphs, quoted from the prefatory remarks accompanying the original publication.
