The Scottish scholar James McCosh (1811-94), President of Princeton University, was one of few clergymen in America who defended evolutionary theory. This book took account of A. R. Wallace's latest work on Darwinism, and put forward the view that evolution and religion, if understood correctly, could peaceably coexist.
