This book is based on the poem, Because of Your Hands, which Janice D. Jenkins wrote about her father, Daniel Jenkins. Janice read the poem publicly for the first time at her family's first ever Intergenerational Family and Friends Day event on September 5, 2009. Janice's father was honored on that day for his lifelong commitment to the Jenkins family. The response to the poem was so overwhelmingly positive that Janice decided to write a book about the poem.
