In this first person narrative, Veronica Esagui, tells her own story, in her own voice through the ages of her youth, spinning a fascinating yarn of intrigue, resilience, control, heartbreak, and fatalism. She describes in the most candid manner the first eighteen years of her life, growing up in Portugal until she came to the USA in 1962. She learns at a very young age that she has no freedom to date or marry who she likes and that there are no friends to turn to. Veronica's mother works out an arrangement with her sister Nelly who lives in the US; a pre arranged marriage is set up between Veronica and Nelly's son. The reader will easily become submerged in a time and culture that is now obsolete. This is the true story of a young girl who grew up learning to obey her elders and not to question their decisions. Veronica must make a life with what life has to offer; she learns that from her Aunt Heydee who becomes her spiritual mentor and teacher.
