The Idea Miners: The Lost Lake Dig is set in 1750--although the year has little impact on the story. The protagonist, Joey, lives on an isolated farm. He's in the midst of a hot, miserable summer. His only friend, Ben, has moved away, and his pa is pressuring him to do more work. Feeling sorry for himself, Joey steals away to the Hole--a deep pool in the stream behind his house--where he is confronted by a strange man. The man gives him two glowing balls, and tells him to give one to his pa. The balls are magical, and spur Joey's pa to remember a forgotten childhood memory where children are challenged to help in another world. The other world is called the Land of Lights, and is the origin of all ideas. The strange man has selected Joey to help in this parallel world. Joey travels to the Land of Lights and finds Ben waiting for him. Together, they join an expedition to retrieve a "gusher"--a buoyant, glowing sphere that holds an as-yet unthought-of brilliant idea.
