Book Description1828. Washington Irving was the first American literary artist to earn his living solely through his writings and is considered to be the Father of the American Short Story. Irving became a diplomatic attache at the American embassy in Madrid in 1826. There he produced his biography of Columbus, largely based on the work of the Spanish historian Navarrete.
