This is an autobiographical and narrative poem describing the life of a Jewish military medical officer in the Red Army, later a civil doctor and a medical scientist who emigrated later in his life from the Soviet Russia to America and settled in New York. The poem provides an intensely personal and intimate account of his journey through a wide range of life experiences during a very eventful time period of Russian and world history, from the end of the World War II until modern times. Dr. Tuzhilin opens a window for us into a rarely seen world of the everyday lives of Russian military officers, doctors and scientists, and shows in poetic terms how hardships, drudgeries and uncertainties of military and civil life coexisted with humorous situations and hard-earned moments of happiness. Together they formed a colorful pageant of life, even in a totalitarian regime focused on suppression of human individuality.
