Memory and Forgetting in English Renaissance Drama: Shakespeare, Marlowe, Webster (Cambridge Studies in Renaissance Literature and Culture)

This study examines sixteenth and seventeenth century conceptions of memory and forgetting, and their importance for both early modern culture and the drama of Shakespeare, Marlowe and Webster. It discusses the physiology of memory and forgetting, and also the various forms of behaviour--from seeking salvation to marrying above your social class--that were described in terms of 'remembering' or 'forgetting' yourself. In particular, Memory and Forgetting in English Renaissance Drama shows how early modern playwrights understood 'self-forgetting' as the occasion for dramatic experiments in representing human behaviour and identity.
