It examines the emergence of Protestant dissent from the Church of England, and it examines how dissenters and their ideas challenged Restoration institutions. It presents liberty of conscience as the greatest political issue of the Restoration; and it explains how the contest between dissenters and Anglicans contributed to the development of parties in 1679-83 and unsettled the nation.
