The classical gold standard has long been a source of fascination to historians, monetary economists and policy-makers. This literature has centered on the few countries of the "core" which adhered longest and most consistently to it and misses out on the forty-odd countries which also adopted it at some stage. This book focuses on a sample of six of the latter, from Europe and Latin America, and discusses the specific problems they encountered as members of this system.
