In the Jewish Tradition, Stories Beget Stories. Many of the stories in this collection come from Midrashim. A Midrash is a story that explains or dramatizes or reimagines an aspect of the Torah, often in bold and fanciful ways. Midrashim frequently grow out of the cracks that Bible stories left unfilled. For example, the book of Genesis tells us that Abraham leaves his father's house and the idol-worshipping ways he was raised with, but it does not illustrate his rebellion. The Midrash retold in this collection imagines for us the moment when Abraham literally smashes his father's pagan idols. Retold by Peninnah Schram.
