"The Soviet Image" provides a window into the life of a people - from the Revolution in the early years of the twentieth century through decades of Soviet rule, two world wars, the cold war era, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the emergence of a new Russia. The 300 photographs in this book, culled from the vast archive of the Russian news agency TASS, have in many cases defined Russian history, and in some cases are its only visual record (without a Kremlin permit, photographing national events was long forbidden).Together they represent both the image that the Soviet Union wished to present to the world and the way that Russians saw, and see, themselves.
