The brilliant Kazimir Malevich was a pioneer of twentieth-century art, the founder of a radical form of abstraction known as Suprematism and a major figure in the Russian avant-garde, who was also instrumental in promoting the radical styles that led to Cubism. Between 1912 and 1915, he showed his work in Futurist exhibitions, encouraging that movement's most abstract tendencies. At the same time, Malevich worked closely with the Futurist poets in their experiments with Zaum, a theoretical language that rejected all attempts at logical expression. Having absorbed the ideals of Zaum, Malevich's visual experiments moved to an extreme of abstraction with his famous Black Square of 1915.
