In the early dawn hours of 22 June 1941 wave after wave of German bomber formations, protected by fighters, overflew the German-Soviet demarcation line without a prior declaration of war. All the Soviet airfields which had been reconnoitered by German high altitude recon aircraft before the offensive were saturated with bombs; fighters and attack aircraft destroyed every fighter they found on the ground with bombs and guns. The enemy's fighter inventory was restricted to virtually two types: the 1-15 and 1-16, both of which had been designed by Professor N.N.Polikarpov, who along with A.N.Tupolev was probably the most brilliant Soviet aircraft designer of his day. Up until 1941 type designations were not formed from abbreviated names of the design collective, such as La for Lavochkin or MiG for Mikoyan and Gurevich; instead they were created from the general classification of the aircraft. "I" stood for "Istrebitel" (fighter), "DI" for "Dvuhmestni Istrebitel"(two-seat fighter)....
