Despite the widespread belief in equality, we live in a world which is marred by deep inequalities. As a white South African Jewish woman, an immigrant and member of an ethnic minority, I personally have experienced discrimination in many guises. I have been both a victim and, involuntarily, one of the perpetrator class. Growing up in a society twisted by the systematic racism of apartheid, with the scars of the Holocaust still fresh, and in a deeply sexist world, I discovered both the central value, and the elusiveness of equality. This book aims to contribute to the search for equality, not by providing answers, but by articulating the questions.
