Prejudice and discrimination against a variety of groups are critical measures of the civil state of societies. The issue demonstrates that the rejection of ethnic and social groups is approaching dangerously high levels in both Western and Eastern Europe. All papers concentrate on empirical findings throughout Europe as well as cross–national comparisons. This research reveals both consistent patterns and intriguing differences across countries. The studies test for differences between traditional prejudices, such as anti–Semitism, and prejudices against the new immigrants and other target groups. This focus allows comparisons between Eastern and Western European patterns of prejudice as well as between Europe, North America and other areas of the world. The issue proposes diverse perspectives, theoretical approaches, levels of analysis, and topics for policy making.
