He was the head coach at the University of Michigan from 1960 to 1968. He led the Wolverines to three NCAA tournament appearances and one title game appearance. He was also the head coach at the University of Idaho for one year. Strack had played collegiately at the University of Michigan and professionally for the Indianapolis Kautskys of the NBL.
