The period is marked by two major upheavals: the advent of a flourishing urban era in North Syria in the first half of the III millennium BC and, concomitantly, the rapid integration of this area into a vast area of interregional exchanges extending from the Indus to Egypt. This work attempts to determine the stages and the driving forces behind these two phenomena and the extent to which they are linked. The comparison of available data confirms that, far from having been a centre of secondary civilisation, the north of Mesopotamia was the cradle of original cultures that played a determining role in the concert of middle eastern "nations" in the III millennium BC.
