It is said in the counseling world that the hardest death to endure is the loss of a child. They are supposed to follow behind us, not go before us. The loss of my son at age twenty six rocked my world. His addiction threatened to take him from me, but I finally lost him to HIV/AIDS. I can only say this has been an incredible journey, a journey of extremes...extreme happiness, extreme sadness...a journey into my soul to find my truth. This child stretched me to the ends of the earth and beyond. He taught me there is more than one way to look at things and that life is not always as we think it should be. He taught me to appreciate the different and that there is enough room in this world for all of us. He taught me patience, tolerance, humility, and a new freedom. He forced me to face my fears about him being gay and not walk away from him. In essence, how to love unconditionally. He taught me just by living his life and being in mine. I always believed as a parent I was to be a guide...
