The poems in this collection conjure up a provocative variety of images, characters, and situations. As McInnis writes, "In the hollow hang of shadows, I sit, drinking, and smoking with possibility’s darker cousins.” This book is filled with dark portraits, landscapes, and characters gambling with love, life, and escape, most of them losing. Many of the poems sit the delicate and profane side by side, forcing them into conversation. Others are barbs at American culture and at those willing to make themselves clowns of so-called fate. McInnis is a skeptic and a joker with a tender heart and an eye for the absurd. He is a poet fascinated by the spectacles housed in the mundane.
