This book is mostly about a 12-year old boy who wishes he had been born an Indian, and follows the development of some of his thoughts, especially his attitude toward nature. A major theme is that he wants to become a "True Mountain Man," without having any clear idea concerning exactly what that is, or how to do it. Along the way, he gets mixed up with complications such as Indians, Tarzan, girls, werewolves, and death. The book ends with some of the experiences the 12-year old boy has after he has grown to become a young man, and is a Park Ranger at Sequoia National Park. He wonders whether this means he has finally become a True Mountain Man, but is still unsure of his qualifications. Between each chapter there is a short section titled "Reflections," from the perspective of many years later. These reflective chapters are: "Wilderness," "A Set of Values," "The Noble Savage," "Nature Revisited," and "Our Public Lands."
