The commoditizing of the arts and popular entertainment is evidence of how the arts are seen as epiphenomenal and peripheral to the real world. Aspects of the everyday are obscured and confounded in order to mythologize them and build authoritative pictures of so-called dominant values (family, community and nation, industry, fairness and equality) that bespeak pride and confidence in the social order. It is the aim of this volume to deconstruct and unsettle some of these constructed myths of social value.
