The volume includes major examples by leading American 18th, 19th and 20th-century artists, Old Master and major 19th-century European artists, and decorative arts including silver, glass, and earthenware. An essay by Joseph Ruzicka about the history of the Museum is followed by an essay by Alan Fern on the history of museums in the United States. The main presentation of artworks and entries are arranged by category.
