During a grey and cold autumn in the Berkshire village of Kingston Dapple, Francesca Meredith inherits the run-down Rita's Rent-a-Dress Shop in the market square. With the help of her slightly-ditzy housemate Lilly and flower-stall-holder and all-round bad-boy Dexter Valentine, Frankie goes retro and turns it into Francesca's Fabulous Frocks, and business starts to boom. As the weather turns even colder and the nights grow ever darker, Frankie - immersed in her fledgling business and happy to be single - watches Dexter's philanderings with amusement. Although, of course, he is rather gorgeous... However, Frankie has other things to occupy her mind when village medium, Maisie Fairbrother, insists that the shop is haunted and offers to hold a seance. Frankie refuses to believe in things that go bump in the night - until several inexplicable events force her to reconsider. Can Maisie's dabblings possibly be behind the shop's strange shenanigans? Before long, Kingston Dapple becomes a spook-spotter's paradise, and Frankie, helped by Dexter, is faced with laying the ghost once and for all.
