This book is an exploration of William Butler Yeats' Plays for Dancers as playscripts. In it, Bitney looks at whether or not the plays work on a stage effectively. As Yeats is usually considered first and foremost as a poet, Bitney wanted to consider him from the point of view of a playwright, a position which he took just as seriously and which he considered just as important. To Yeats the theatre was extremely influential and he deeply hoped that his work there would affect the soul and pride of the Irish people. Was he successful?
