Once we consider potential applications of nanotechnology to medicine, it is not difficult to imagine what nanodentistry would look like. Robert A. Frietas defines nanodentistry ‘as the science and technology that will make possible the maintenance of comprehensive oral health by employing use of nanomaterials, biotechnology including tissue engineering and ultimately dental nanorobotics’. Some of potential applications to dentistry include local anesthesia, reconstruction of dental hard tissues, orthodontic treatment and disease prevention.
