One warm August night in 1956 in the small town of Eagle Springs, Colorado, 17-year old Buck Malone witnesses a young, beautiful Native American woman being pushed around by his best friends father at the annual square dance in the town park. When Buck sees the same woman the next night nursing a cup of coffee and a battered face at the soda fountain in the town drugstore, he wonders if he should go in and help her. If he does, he could face discrimination by the town and reproach from his family. If he doesn't, he will forever see her battered face and wonder what happened. Buck gathers the courage to go into the drugstore, an act of compassion that eventually leads to a hopeless interracial love affair with Pauline Moon, a Ute woman seven years his senior. IF I GO is the story of Buck and his friends' coming of age as they struggle to overcome the bigotry of their small town and the indifference of their families.
