The struggle that we face is really who we are trying to become. When we think of the church, are we thinking of an institution that serves the needs of the members, or should we be placing our faith at risk by making ourselves vulnerable to the needs of others? We are trapped in this dilemma of producing individuals who are conversant in the language of religion, but not comfortable with the work of religion. We speak of this journey as religion, and that gives us a sense of satisfaction. One of the songs that I cut my religious teeth into had these words in it: "So glad I got good religion." Our joy in church is oftentimes rescued by the fact that we come to church and participate in the process of church. Nothing really changes, and so we revert to the one thing that no one can take from us, we "got good religion."
