Eyes were watching from the darkness, waiting for a chance to move in closer and begin the sing-song torment within her mind. She knew the familiar voices well, and she dreaded their approach. Is this how it ends, she thought, on the back side of the desert, alone in the dark with the voices in her head? She stumbled and felt with the weight of her pain fall upon her like a crushing blow. From her innermost being, a tortured cry rose in the dark, causing her enemies to shake in fear, for it was on another hillside amid the darkness of another time that they had heard those same words echo: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" The scream pierced the night and after it came a sudden stillness. Her heart ached and amid the tears, filth, and blood, she collapsed. Something about that cry had stopped her torture and signaled her surrender. The wind died down and the stars appeared bright above her, but she only knew a blessed quiet within her soul. She lay down and slept as a child.
