Most joined because they were Volksdeutsche (of German descent born in German enclaves in foreign countries) and felt a loyalty and patriotism to the mother country. At this time foreigners, including Volksdeutsche could not join the regular German Army (Herr), their only option was to enlist in the Waffen-SS. A man has to learn to accept the challenges of adjusting to the vicious and harsh circumstances of his changing world or perish. Rudi Mueller is a young man of German ancestry who grows up in the pre-World War II City State of Danzig. At the outbreak of war he joins the Waffen SS and becomes an officer.
