Andrew Samuels was a mountain faith healer who lived alongside the Hiawassee River in Clay County, North Carolina. A devout and dedicated Christian, he practiced what he preached. JB Smith, as a young boy, watched the man and his faith in action. He carefully observes the old man and his ability to talk to God and personally witnesses miracles. While in college, Samuels is killed, and Smith serves as a pallbearer in a traditional mountain funeral. Smith's faith grows initially, but he becomes a Soldier and begins seeing the world through a Soldier's eyes. Throughout his travels, he remembers the long dead Mr. Samuels and his faith. He sharpens his skills for his own survival but becomes detached from his own family.
