There in my hand was a nugget of gold the size of a quail's egg. I had never seen gold before, but there was a weight and a warm softness about this lump that made me realize it was for real. My heart squeezed itself within my chest and cut off my breath. I was afraid I would faint, and sinking to my knees, I stared at the lump in my soot-covered hand for a long time, unable to move. Such unexpected treasure in an unexpected place; I was awestruck. Finally I came out of my daze and shoving the nugget into my jean pocket, I got to my feet. I was almost afraid to explore any further, but I moved over to the pile of furs just as something moved within the pile, and again my heart jolted and raced as my flashlight lit up a pair of eyes that had been watching my every move since I entered the cave.
