During the American Civil War, more than 2,000 regiments of infantry, cavalry, and field artillery mustered in to fight in the conflict. One of these was the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first black infantry regiment raised by the Union Army, of which very little is known. Besides being the first in this category, this unit also had other firsts as a black regiment: (1) the first one to be composed of former slaves; (2) to conduct company-level and then regimental operations in the Confederate states of Georgia and Florida; (3) to be in combat against the Confederates; (4) to successfully engage the Rebels and inflict casualties on them; and (5) to be brigaded with white regiments.
