Seth Taylor is surprised when his Mom, Trudy, announces that she has entered them and their sailboat, Miss Trudy, in the Transpac Ocean Race from Los Angeles to Honolulu, Hawaii, as a graduation gift. A call from his mom's "sometime" friend, Roger, who's been out of town, has him inviting himself to join them in their race. He will pay all the entrance costs and because Trudy can use the money; she agrees. Seth senses something sinister about Roger and his motivations. The race starts out with extreme excitement and exhilaration. After a short time, however, Seth notices they're going off course, and his mom becomes ill. Why does she suddenly die? Why does Roger insist that Seth take his mom's body in the rubber dinghy to have a personal burial at sea, only to have it become a struggle for Seth to survive, as Roger cuts the lifeline to the dinghy! Roger is sure this skinny kid cannot survive the harsh sea. But Seth is a smart kid! He survives rough storms at sea, and the dinghy lands...
