Alien visitors exploring the great void happen upon a blue planet full of water and life: Earth. In interstellar vehicles, these strange creatures observe our planet with cold calculation via superior technological methods, their persons never seen by human eyes. The visitors marvel at the power of the human psyche, in the humans ability to love, hate, fear, anger, joy, and most of all to hope. After subtly taking what they needed from earth, these visitors decide to leave gifts in the care of humans. These take the form of living steel objects known as Amulets and once created, the visitors hastily depart Earth. Humankind collectively mourns the visitors' arrival but embrace their gifts and use them to rapidly colonize Earth's solar system, just as the visitors wanted. Soon, Luna Prime (Earth's Moon), Mars, Jupiter, and Neptune are vibrant with human life. Then, mysteriously, merchant marines and other travelers through our solar system are being kidnapped from their raided ships...
