Carl Linder's heartfelt novel begins in the present, with a disillusioned man feeling out of place in the sometimes cruel world in which he lives. Seeking solace in his past, he begins to write a nostalgic account of his youth, and the miraculous events of his thirteenth year. Traveling back in time, we are introduced to Chad Bradley, who lives with his parents and two younger sisters on the poorer side of town. Chad harbors great dreams of future popularity; dreams which are to be severely tested when he befriends Jesse Thomas, a lonely boy, who with his mother and handicapped sister, are desperately trying to make it on their own. An unlikely friendship develops between the two boys; a friendship which eventually leads to a touching relationship between their respective families, who help each other with "unselfish abandon." Then unforeseen tragedy strikes Chad's family, paralyzing them all with grief and disillusionment, and just when all hope seems lost, a "special magic" is...
