The Grand Canyon is a Place of 'Medicine.' The "'Legend" is a story of one young boy's search for what Native Americans call 'medicine.' It is a rite of passage, a spiritual quest that determines their destiny. His village, on the south rim of the Canyon, is helpless against enemy attacks. The tribe is crushed and starved of hope until Nighthawk, the medicine man, has a vision that would teach them to stand. The prophecy offers one brilliant ray of hope and then is seemingly dashed in its infancy by a cruel twist of fate. The story was born during a hiking trek into the Grand Canyon in the fall of 1983. It was unshakable and compelled me to write. The Canyon is a sacred place, one of many in the Four Corners region, rich with Native American folklore.
