David Belasco (1853-1931) was an American theatrical producer, impresario, director and playwright, best known for adapting the short story "Madame Butterfly" into a play and writing The Girl of the Golden West for the stage, both of which were adapted as operas by Giacomo Puccini. Belasco novelized this melodrama set in the California Gold Rushfor this volume.
