Laszlo Stern, a rifleman in the Niagara Highland Regiment, is wounded during a dawn assault on Orange Hill in Flanders during World War I. In a London hospital, he falls for an English nurse, Wendy Bolton. Wendy and her father are Communists and they quickly convert Laszlo to their revolutionary philosophy. After going absent without-leave, Laszlo buys the papers of an artillery officer posted to Arkangel with the Allied Intervention force. Laszlo commands a blockhouse at Ust Padenga where he becomes entangled with a wealthy Russian woman and her maid, Katrina. Finally breaking with Madame Rudenko, Laszlo deserts and joins the Red Guard Cavalry. During the Civil War, Laszlo meets Stalin and leads a charge in the final battle of that war. Laszlo enters the Kremlin Military Academy. He is on duty at Lenin's funeral and hears that Katrina is starving in Moscow. He finds her and later on they marry. Stalin's Canadian follows Laszlo's twenty-year career in the Red Army and the hardships...
