The lack of a definitive diagnosis at prestigious hospitals in Texas, Colorado, Arizona and California failed to provide answers and the educational help she sought. Cissy was 21 before she was declared autistic; yet the classic definition did not describe her condition fully. As autism embraced other aspects of the disorder, one appeared in 2000 that seemed to explain her development over the years. Childhood Dementia Disorder answered some of the puzzling features of Cissy's disability. This book was written in the hope that other parents also searching might recognize their own child's heartbreaking loss of early skills.
