When young Ari's Grandfather is executed for daring to practice the art of writing, Ari is forced to flee his village. His exile brings him into contact with a ferocious tribe of warriors, and as he begins to discover his true strength he must decide whether or not to seek revenge on an empire that kills those who dare to defy its laws. There are others, including the girl Lilija, a fierce soldier-in-training who is owned by the great City Tratalja, who are also trying to find a way to fight this growing empire that desires to control the greatest creative power in existence: the power to create something out of nothing using only the written word. Set in an ancient and violent time, Blood and Gods is an exploration of the power of creativity and the freedom of the individual in the midst of an empire's attempts to expand both its physical territory and its hold on corrupt and abusive power.
