ABOUT THE NOVEL: "The Trembling Flu" is a fictional novel based on several diverse real life Infectious Disease events that occurred during the last half century. In this novel there are three stories woven together into a bioterrorism theme. The first deals with a mysterious disease found in the wilds of Papua New Guinea. The second is a failed influenza virus vaccination program that took place during Gerald Ford's tenure as President. The third integrates solving the medical mystery in New Guinea with a misguided attempt to prevent a repeat of the devastating 1918 pandemic of influenza A. In turn, these events result in a successful bioterrorism plot with gruesome consequences. The author lived through some of the real life events and is able to illustrate the highs and lows of the Infectious Diseases specialty going from a Nobel Prize in Medicine, to a major vaccine disaster, to a miracle cure of an unusual infection.
