Joseph Conrad (born Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, 1857-1924) was a Polish-born English novelist. Best known for Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim, Conrad wrote The Rescue to conclude "The Lingard Trilogy", based on Conrad's experience as mate on a steamer. Although it was published after Almayer's Folly (1895) and An Outcast of the Islands (1896), the events related in The Rescue are a "prequel."
