Aleksandr Sergeevich Neverov (real surname Skobelev, 1886-1923) was one of the first Soviet writers to skillfully portray the social and psychological conflicts among the peasantry. His oft-cited Tashkent, City of Bread (1923) gives a vivid portrayal of life immediately after the Bolshevik Revolution. His short story, Hunger, is included in W. Somerset Maugham's Tellers of Tales: 100 Short Stories from the United States, England, France, Russia and Germany.
